How to Choose Between Manual, Gear, Pneumatic and Electric Plug Valves?

ZZJG VALVE - 2026-11-02

Manual, gear, pneumatic and electric plug valves have different operation methods and are suitable for different pipelines and working conditions. When purchasing plug valves, users need to consider plug valve size, operating torque, switching frequency, on-site conditions and control requirements.

So, what situations do manual, gear, pneumatic and electric plug valves apply to respectively? And how should they be selected during the purchase?

ZZJG Manual Plug Valves

 1. Manual Plug Valve: Suitable for Simple On-site Operations

The manual plug valve is operated by a handwheel or handle. Its structure is relatively simple and does not require power supply or air supply. Installation is also relatively convenient.

For small-diameter plug valves or those with lower operating torque, manual operation usually meets the requirements. If the plug valve is mainly used for pipe cutting and isolation and the opening and closing frequency is not high, the manual valve is a relatively economical choice.

Manual plug valves are suitable for:

- Small-diameter pipelines

- Pipelines with low opening and closing frequency

- Valves that require on-site manual operation

- Installation locations without power supply or air supply

- General industrial and water treatment pipelines

If the plug valve size is large or the opening and closing require a larger torque, direct use of a handwheel may be more difficult. In this case, a gear operation can be considered.

 2. Gear Operated Plug Valve: Suitable for Large Diameters and High Torque Valves

The gear mechanism can reduce the force that the operator needs to apply, making large-diameter plug valve opening and closing easier.

The gear operated plug valve still requires on-site manual operation, but it does not need air supply or power. Therefore, if the plug valve requires manual operation and direct use of a handwheel is difficult, a gear mechanism is usually a suitable choice.

Gear operated plug valves are often used for:

- Large-diameter pipelines

- Valves with high torque

- Oil and gas pipelines

- Refinery installations

- Chemical pipelines

- Valves that require on-site manual operation

The gear operation can reduce the operating force, but it requires more rotations when opening and closing. If the plug valve needs to be opened and closed quickly or operated frequently, further consideration can be given to pneumatic or electric methods.

 3. Pneumatic Plug Valve: Suitable for Fast and Remote Operations

The pneumatic plug valve is driven by compressed air through an air-driven actuator, which then moves the valve to open and close.

This method is suitable for pipelines that require remote operation or frequent opening and closing. The air-driven actuator operates quickly and can be connected to the on-site control system.

If the factory already has a stable compressed air system, a pneumatic plug valve is usually more convenient. According to project requirements, a single-acting or double-acting air-driven actuator can also be selected.

Pneumatic valves are suitable for:

- Oil and gas pipelines

- Refinery and chemical plants

- Pipelines that require remote control

- Valves that need to be opened and closed quickly

- Pipelines with frequent operations

- Factories with a stable compressed air system

For projects with safety requirements, the failure open or failure close functions can be selected according to process requirements.

 4. Electric Plug Valve: Suitable for Electrical Control and Remote Operation

The electric plug valve is driven by an electric actuator. It does not require compressed air, so the electric method is more convenient in situations without a stable air source.

The electric actuator can be connected to the on-site control system to achieve remote opening and closing. For industrial pipelines that require centralized control, the electric plug valve can reduce on-site manual operation.

Electric plug valves are suitable for:

- Pipelines that require remote control

- Factories with electrical control systems

- Locations without a stable air source

- Pipelines that need to be opened and closed automatically

- Oil, chemical and power plants

- Systems that need to control the operation status of the valve

Compared with pneumatic plug valves, electric plug valves are more dependent on power supply and electrical control systems. If there is already a complete electrical system on site and compressed air is not readily available, the electric method is usually more suitable.

 5. What Are The Differences Between Pneumatic And Electric Plug Valves?

Pneumatic and electric are both automatic operation methods, but they have different working conditions.

Pneumatic plug valves require compressed air. Their advantage is that they operate quickly and are suitable for situations that require rapid opening and closing. If the factory already has a stable air source, the pneumatic method is usually more convenient.

Electric plug valves require power. They are more suitable for systems with electrical control and also for sites without a stable air source.

Therefore, choosing between pneumatic or electric does not solely depend on the price. One must first consider the energy conditions at the site and the control requirements.

6. What Parameters Need To Be Confirmed Before Choosing The Operation Mode?

The operation mode of the plug valve cannot be determined solely based on the valve port diameter. Before purchasing, it is also necessary to confirm the actual working conditions.

Firstly, the operating torque of the valve needs to be confirmed. The operating torque will affect the selection of manual, gear, and actuator.

Secondly, the opening and closing frequency of the valve needs to be understood. If the valve is only operated a few times a day, manual or gear operation can usually meet the requirements. If the valve needs to be frequently opened and closed, pneumatic or electric operation can be considered.

It is also necessary to confirm the energy conditions on site. If there is a stable compressed air supply on site, pneumatic actuators can be considered. If the site is mainly powered by an electrical system and there is no convenient air source, electric actuators can be considered.

When purchasing a plug valve, the following parameters can be provided in advance:

- Nominal size

- Pressure rating

- Working temperature

- Working medium

- Maximum pressure difference

- Operating torque

- Opening and closing time

- Operating frequency

- Whether remote control is required

- On-site air source conditions

- On-site power supply conditions

- Whether fail-open or fail-closed is required

- Installation environment and explosion-proof requirements

ZZJG VALVE Provides Plug Valves With Multiple Operation Modes

ZZJG valves can provide manual, gear, pneumatic and electric stop valves according to project requirements. The company will select the appropriate operation mode based on valve size, pressure rating, working medium, working temperature, operating torque and on-site control requirements.

For small-diameter and low-frequency operating pipelines, manual cartridge valves can be chosen. For large-diameter or valves with large operating torque, gear devices can be configured. For pipeline systems requiring rapid opening and closing and remote control, pneumatic actuators can be configured. For systems that mainly use electrical control or where there is no stable air source on site, electric actuators can be configured.

Choosing the appropriate operation mode makes the cartridge valve easier to operate and can also meet the control requirements of the pipeline system. When purchasing, it is necessary to first confirm the actual working conditions, operating frequency and on-site environment, and then select the appropriate operation mode.
