Aviation Kerosene Valve: Core Functions and Advantages of Double Block & Bleed Plug Valves

Aviation kerosene (mainly Jet A-1 and JP-8) is the core energy for aviation power. Its storage, transportation and use have very strict requirements for safety and sealing.

Aviation Kerosene Valve: Core Functions and Advantages of Double Block & Bleed Plug Valves

Valves are the "throat" of fluid control. They directly affect the reliability of aviation kerosene systems. If there is leakage, jamming or failure, it will not only waste energy. It may also cause fatal risks such as fire and explosion.

Among many special valves for aviation kerosene, the Double Block & Bleed (DBB) Plug Valve is unique in structure. It acts as a "safety guard" in key pipelines, oil depots and aircraft fuel systems. This article will introduce the core knowledge of this special valve.

1. Core Requirements for Aviation Kerosene Valves

Aviation kerosene is volatile and flammable. It must stay fluid at low temperatures. So valves for it must be better than ordinary industrial valves. They need to meet four core requirements:

(1) Zero leakage: Prevent safety hazards caused by kerosene seepage.

(2) Explosion-proof and fire-safe: Adapt to kerosene’s flammable and explosive characteristics. Avoid sparks during operation or failure. Keep sealing even in case of fire.

(3) Corrosion and temperature resistance: Resist corrosion from kerosene. Withstand temperature changes (-40°C to +80°C) in high-altitude, apron, oil depot and other places.

(4) Reliable operation: Open and close quickly in emergencies. Not easy to jam after long-term use. Easy to maintain.

The DBB plug valve is designed to meet these strict requirements. It is especially good at "zero leakage" and "safety redundancy". It is the first choice for key parts of aviation kerosene systems.

2. Core Analysis: What is a Double Block & Bleed Plug Valve?

The Double Block & Bleed (DBB) plug valve is a special control valve. It is improved from the ordinary plug valve. Its core features are "Double Block" and "Double Bleed". These are its key advantages over ordinary plug valves and ball valves. Its working principle is simple: "dual protection + active pressure relief".

2.1 Core Structure: Not Just "One Valve", But a Dual Barrier

Ordinary plug valves have only one sealing surface. They rely on plug rotation to open or close the pipeline. Once the sealing surface is worn or damaged, leakage will occur. In contrast, the DBB plug valve has two independent sealing plugs (or sealing pairs) inside the valve body. They correspond to the upstream and downstream of the pipeline, forming a "double block" structure.

When the plug valve is closed, both sealing plugs shut at the same time. They completely separate the central valve cavity from the upstream and downstream pipelines. It is like installing two "safety gates" on the pipeline. Even if one seal fails, the other can still work. This structurally prevents medium leakage. At the same time, there is a special bleed port in the middle of the valve cavity. It can be connected to a discharge line or pressure gauge.

After the plug valve is closed, residual aviation kerosene in the cavity can be drained through the bleed port. On one hand, it prevents corrosion and fouling caused by long-term oil accumulation in the cavity. On the other hand, it can check the sealing status of the two sealing surfaces through the discharge. It helps find potential faults in time, realizing "active pressure relief and condition monitoring".

2.2 Working Principle: Simple Operation, Multiple Protection

The DBB plug valve operates like an ordinary plug valve. Rotate the plug 90° by handwheel, electric or pneumatic drive. Then the pipeline can be opened or closed.

- Open state: Both plugs rotate to the open position at the same time.

Aviation kerosene can pass through the valve cavity smoothly. It has low flow resistance and stable flow rate. It is suitable for large-volume aviation kerosene delivery.

- Closed state: Both plugs rotate to the sealed position at the same time.

The dual sealing surfaces separate the upstream and downstream pipelines from the valve cavity. Then drain the residual kerosene in the cavity through the bleed port. Complete the whole process of "block + bleed" to ensure no residue and no leakage.

- Maintenance state: If you need to maintain the valve, there is no need to cut off the medium delivery of the entire pipeline.

Just close the DBB plug valve and drain the oil in the cavity. Then you can perform maintenance safely. This greatly improves maintenance efficiency and reduces system downtime. If you need this DBB plug valve, feel free to inquire and contact ZZJG.
