1. What is TA2?

TA2 is class sign of Chinese commercial pure titanium, GB/T 2965-2007. It is equivalent to international standard Gr.2 titanium (American ASTM standard).

2. Why is TA2 Material Commonly Used in Plug Valves?

Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: it is the key advantage. TA2 has excellent corrosion resistance

to seawater, chlorides (like brine and bleach), wet chlorine, nitric acid, and organic acids, far exceeding common stainless steels (e.g., 304, 316). It is an ideal choice of chemical processing, marine, nuclear, and desalination plants.

Ideal Strength and Ductility: The tensile strength of TA2 is ≥ 440 MPa. The strength of TA2 is higher than that of ordinary stainless steel, while still maintaining excellent ductility and toughness.This combination allows for easier cold/hot forming (e.g., forging valve bodies) and welding.

Optimal performance balance: Compared to the higher-grade TA3 (level 3), the strength of TA2 is slightly lower, but its formability is better. Compared to TA1 (level 1), TA2 has higher strength in pressure-bearing components. Therefore, TA2 achieves the best overall balance among corrosion resistance, strength, and machinability.

Low density and lightweight: With a density only 60% that of steel, titanium makes valves significantly lighter, reducing weight by up to 40% compared to steel counterparts.

3. Main Application Areas

Valves are made of TA2 material are widely used in applications with stringent requirements for corrosive media:

- Marine engineering and shipbuilding: seawater pipeline systems, ballast water systems.

- Chemical and petrochemical industry: Equipment for processing chlorine-based products, hydrochloric acid, chlorine-containing media and organic chlorinated compounds.

- Seawater desalination: Evaporator, inlet and outlet of the high-pressure pump.

- Power and environmental protection: Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems, cooling water systems in nuclear power plants.

- Pharmaceutical and food industries: High-purity media pipeline.

4. Comparison with Other Materials

The core advantage of TA2 (industrial pure titanium) valves is their superior resistance to chloride ion corrosion, which is the fundamental difference between them and commonly used stainless steel valves.

Compared to stainless steel (such as 304/316): Stainless steel is highly susceptible to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking in chloride-containing media (such as seawater and brine), while TA2 is almost unaffected and has a much longer service life than stainless steel.

Compared to higher-end titanium materials (such as TA9/Gr.7): TA9 (containing palladium) has superior corrosion resistance, but is several times more expensive. TA2 is reliable enough for most harsh operating conditions and is the most cost-effective corrosion-resistant titanium valve material, thus becoming the first choice in chemical, marine, and other fields.

5. Summary

Valve material TA2 refers to valves made from industrial pure titanium of the Chinese grade TA2 (equivalent to US Gr.2). It is the "gold standard" material in the valve industry for dealing with medium to high-intensity corrosive media. With its excellent resistance to chloride ion corrosion, good comprehensive mechanical properties, and relatively reasonable cost, it has become the first choice to replace stainless steel valves in harsh operating conditions.
